History of LSGS at Sunningdale Heath Golf Club

The LADIES STAGE GOLFING SOCIETY was founded in February 1921 and the inaugural meeting won by Mrs Cory- Wright, formerly Miss Felicity Tree, a daughter of the famous Sir Herbert Tree. Also playing that day were Miss Viola Tree, another of Sir Herbert’s daughters, and Mrs George Du Maurier, mother of Daphne Du Maurier whose daughter-in-law Hacker Browning is a member today. Other players included a music hall performer and an actress from The D’Oyly Carte Company.

In our Autumn Meeting we play for the Gladys Cooper Cup, she was another of the first members. Matches were arranged against The Parliamentarians and The Scribes, women journalists. Our match against the Parliamentarians has recently been revived.

Sadly all detailed records were lost in a fire during the war. After a break of over 20 years members got together in 1969 and reformed the society. Active members included well known actress Eileen Peel who was our first post war president, actress and dancer Roma Beaumont, the first post war Captain, who presented a cup we still play for, and impresario and translator Kitty Black. From the following year all LSGS home matches and annual meetings have been held here at Sunningdale Heath Golf Club, formerly Sunningdale Ladies.

On 13 May 2002, at the request of The Club, The Society put on a memorable show to mark the Club’s Centenary. The review was written by Gordon Clyde whose comic lyrics reflected the history of Sunningdale Heath Golf Club. Highlights included the challenges of members playing golf with mothers as partners, playing over wartime vegetable patches and ducking passing Spitfires during World War Two!

An annual friendly match against Sunningdale Heath Golf Club for the Del Mar Trophy continues our long association. The trophy is kept on show at the Club.

Our grateful thanks to Sunningdale Heath for letting us share their facilities and wonderfully testing golf course.
